Seizures
and Convulsion in Infants, Children and Adolescents
by Leonardo Garcia-Mendez, M.D.
Dr.
Garcia-Mendez is a pediatric neurologist and Associate Professor
in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology and Child Health at
the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine.
It
is a considerable accomplishment that in only 348 pages (including
3 pages for notes titled "Questions for my Doctor"), the author
has managed to present just about all that anyone, except perhaps
a neurologist, might want to know about seizure disorders in children.
What makes this book so special is that the information is presented
in a way that makes a very complicated subject easy to understand.
The book is organized into 20 short chapters with subjects ranging
from classification of seizures to very practical issues of daily
living activities for persons with seizures. A concise and up-to-date
bibliography is included for those who wish to look into the subject
in more detail.
Although
Dr. Garcia-Mendez states on the cover of the book that it is a practical,
informative guide for parents, teachers, and paramedical personnel,
I believe most physicians and physicans-in-training would also benefit
from reading the book. The chapters on neurological examination
and electroencephalography are particularly noteworthy: I finally
understand a little bit about those lines on the EEG!
