This book is dedicated to all of the children who in one way or another talked with and stimulated the author to write down the information enclosed within the book. Dr. Garcia-Mendez puts an amazing wealth of clinical experience into words as he prepared this book for the families of children with seizures.

Dr. Garcia clearly explains in language understandable to laymen, the classification and conditions associated with seizures and then allows the patient and families to understand why the differential diagnosis, electroencephalography, neurological evaluation and testing are necessary. In the chapter on electroencephalography he not only explains what type of information will come from the procedure, but he also explains how the EEG is done, how long it takes and what type of procedure, such as hyperventilation, will be performed during the test. Besides discussing needed medical treatment for convulsions, he tells the family about monitoring of blood levels and the importance of medication compliance. Within the chapter on General Guidelines In the Treatment and Management of the Epileptic Child, he explains not only the physicians role, but the role of the entire family. He includes what physicians should tell children and how the family might help explain the situation to others who become involved with the child, including the teacher. Psychological and emotional aspects of children with epilepsy are also discussed in a meaningful way for nearly all families.

This book is written in an informative style by a clinical expert in epilepsy. I highly recommend this book for the families of children with epilepsy, and for others who care for or come in contact with these children. Dr. Garcia-Mendez has provided us with a great resource.
